Are Mobile Devices Really More Popular Than Desktop Devices?

Were you to head back in time to when the first Apple iPhone was announced, you might be surprised at the proclamations. It was suggested that it was a ‘gimmick’ and that ‘nobody wanted to be online all the time’ – such statements now, of course, feel foolish. At the time, though, the smartphone and the desire to be online all the time was met with a significant ‘meh’ by many consumers.

However, if you were to be told that today the desktop is now outnumbered by the mobile device, you would probably not be too surprised. Head into a standard home today, and PCs and laptops are in comparatively short supply. However, it would appear that everyone – even grandma and grandpa – have smartphones today. The ease of access? The constant connectivity? The perpetual improvement? It’s all part of the reason why, according to Signal Boosters and their new infographic found below, the mobile industry is the dominant force today.

Indeed, they even estimate that a whopping 55% of people in the world today can now get access to the internet. That’s 3.2 billion people, roughly. And around 2 billion of them are going to be getting their web access primarily or entirely through the mobile industry!

The Changing Face Of Technology

Even more interestingly, though, is the fact that this infographic notes that smartphone and desktop internet usage is totally different. While some people obviously far exceed this, the average time that was spent on a desktop or laptop device was around 34 hours per month. That’s a lot of time, but it pales in comparison to the average time per month spent on the average smartphone.

You see, people are – at present – spending as long as 87 hours per month messing around with their mobile devices. This shows you that over double the amount of time is being spend on a mobile device looking around. Try telling that to the version of yourself that was present on the day the first iPhone hit the shelves!

It’s a transformative change and shows no sign of slowing down. In fact, it’s also seen in the way that we use the internet today. In the past, we would use the internet for things like browsing, information and shopping.

Today? we spend much more time online using our smartphones to do a bit of life-changing. From buying products to people on the go to paying off bills using mobile payments or mobile banking, everything in the industry has been irreversibly changed.

It’s a transformative program, and one that has had a huge impact on the industry as a whole. If you are serious about being able to see just why the internet industry is in the midst of a transformation, you need only take a look at mobile devices.

They are playing such a key role in the transformative change and movement of the mobile industry, and it shows no signs of slowing down. With a 25% year-on-year growth expected until at least 2022, it’s safe to say the mobile era is here to stay.
